0.0 Km Marker: FINISTERRE – Is It Really The End of The Earth?
Cape Finisterre (Cabo Fisterra) is a rock-bound peninsula on the west coast of Galicia, Spain.
In Roman times it was believed to be the end of the known world. The name Finisterre, derives from the Latin finis terrae, meaning “end of the earth”. Is it really the end of the earth? NO, of course not! In fact the most westerly part of The Iberian Peninsula is in Portugal – 16 Km further west than Cape Finisterre!
Dont be fooled! This is a treacherous coastline and the burial ground of many ships!
DID COLUMBUS SAIL FROM HERE?
He did sail 4 times from Europe to the New World, but I have yet to find research saying he went from here ( at least not on his first voyage).
THE WEATHER CHANGES QUICKLY! Note the storm clouds rolling in!
PHOTOS FROM MY WALK AROUND THE TOWN!
Cape Finisterre May Not Be The End of The Earth, But it is The END of My Journey!
I head back to Santiago tomorrow, overnight, then I head home! My 800+ Km journey walking across Spain is done!
I will write more about my thoughts on this journey in the days ahead!
