Rest Days are Always Good!

Beautiful Viana do Castelo!

Today was a an extra day to rest in Viana do Castelo, Portugal. I was up very early exploring the town this morning.

6:00 am photos of the old historic district.

I should have known that the town was beautiful because it was really breathtaking as we hiked into it. IT WAS NOT A SHORT OR EASY HIKE, but it was lovely!  The hills were just annoying.

The Templo de Santa Luzia

As soon  as you approach the city  and cross the Lima River, you can’t help but notice a magnificent church on the top of the mountain!

I knew that I was going up there to check it out!

IT WAS SPECTACULAR, AS WERE THE  VIEWS!

Inside was was very bright and stunningly beautiful! I really enjoyed the trip up on the funicular!

HERE ARE VIEWS OF THE LIMA RIVER AND THE COAST OF PORTUGAL!

I have thoroughly enjoyed this stop! The hiking is getting tough and the distances are longer than I prefer. I really do love the 14 Km to 20 Km days. My body (back, knees, and feet) cope well with those distances. Tomorrow is a 27 Km day! I can do it, but I just don’t love it. Time will tell what happens.

We have decided to follow a path detailed in a guide book that has us back in the coast. Hopefully, we will avoid some major hills!

In a few days, our adventure in Portugal ends as The Camino Portuguese brings us back into Spain as we begin heading back to Santiago!

KEEP WALKING!

  1. Thanks Dan for posting your wonderful photos and sharing your experiences. You are an inspiration! I love the way that you write about the friendliness and helpfulness of the people that you meet. Really the beauty of many places even our front door step or pathway goes unnoticed in this “iPhone” age. I hope the rest of your journey is as perfect as the first.!

  2. Loving your posts, Dan. The photos are amazing, and the commentary is both educational and entertaining! Thank you!
