Oh The Mesta . . . Part 1

WHO SAID THE MESETA WAS FLAT?

24 .5 Km walked

Day 19 – September 11

Whoever it was, clearly has not seen the Canadian Prairies, the American Mid-West, or the outback portion of New South Wales, Australia. The Spanish Meseta is flatter than most of the terrain we have seen, but there are still hills. Our first day was a 24.5 Km walk with an 850 meter climb!

The sun just beats down on you with no mercy. July must be a killer!

This was a 2000 year old Roman Bridge that we crossed. Imagine that 2000 years ago, pilgrims walked this same path!

OMG – SHOOT ME!

Our Albergue for the night in La Mochila WAS A DUMP!

Our welcome to town was the scene of a dog carrying a rat in its mouth! UGH! The beds were ” not up to par” I scratched all night long! I have to say that this place was a dump! We had walked so far in the extreme heat and had no energy left. The next town was over 17.5 KM away and it was late afternoon. None of us could walk further.

We knew immediately that we would not lift any bed covers and sleep inside. We all slept in our clothes on the bed. I used the washrooms only ass an emergency. No bathing, showers, teeth brushing etc. In fact, we didn’t even eat at their restaurant. We found a place in town and I only ate food that was deep fried! I didn’t want to risk bacterial infections anywhere!

I saw a rather masculine sounding looking and sounding  woman mid afternoon! I called her Chiquita! She was a real woman and I bet she could bend a tire arm with her bare hands!  I saw her again at 9:30 pm “ALL DRESSED UP FOR A NIGHT ON THE TOWN”! YIKES!!!!  She was hot to trot but the town only had 55 people in it, so her pickings must have been slim!

we woke up at 4 am and literally ran out of there in the pitch dark and headed forward!

OH THE MESETA!

KEEP WALKING!
